Galaxies are some of the largest objects in space and are clusters of stars. In a sense, they are islands or cities formed from stars and places where these stars form from interstellar dust and hydrogen, and between them, there is essentially no matter as such, at least not the kind that could be detected by contemporary observation methods. However, intergalactic space may be filled with low-density matter such as very diffuse hydrogen or intergalactic dust, and in some places, there is probably a lot of it. Galaxies must have formed from the basic matter that was available at the very beginning, and under the influence of gravity, they formed into the currently visible galactic formations from Earth.
